The entire state of Iowa will pretty much shut down later tonight. If you're not from around here it may not seem like a big deal to you. The bosses at my day job know exactly how Iowans behave when our team takes the field. They need to make big adjustments to handle the lack of shoppers during games. Tonight is no exception. It's the battle of the two teams vying for the conference championship.
College football may be big in these parts. I do believe there is something bigger. In fact, it's one of the reasons why I'm such a huge fan. It has to do with the kids and their families who watch the home games from the 12th floor of the Children's Hospital which towers over the stadium in Iowa City. These kids are fighting for their lives. For them, football is a great diversion. For the fans and the teams on the field, that pause at the end of the first quarter is the moment to acknowledge these sick kids. Even the opponents wave to these special kids. My hope for tonight is that our team's tradition of waving to the kids at our hospital is somehow recognized even though this game is away. I hope these kids know we are all praying for them. Sure, a conference championship would be nice too. Those youngsters on the 12th floor will be cheering. Good luck, Hawkeyes. Have a great day.
