God Helps Those Who Help Themselves

When White House spokesperson Jay Carney said "I believe the phrase from the Bible is, 'The Lord helps those who help themselves,'" he gaffed.  He was attempting to back up the president's suggestion that God wants policymakers to get busy and create more jobs.

The quote is attributed to Ben Franklin, however, it's roots go back to ancient Greece in Aesop's Fables.  Many falsely believe it can be found in the Bible just as they believe job creation is the job of government.  The truth is, God helps those who CANNOT help themselves.  We're not able to escape the penalties of sin on our own.  We need Jesus.  He came for the helpless.  The blind cannot help themselves.  The deaf cannot hear by wishful thinking.  Jesus has a heart for you, even as you feel despair creeping in all around you.

It's by God's Grace we find help.  It's possible that someday it may not be "politically correct" to read the Bible.  People may buy into the false assumption they must help themselves before God will lend a hand.  Go ahead... be a rebel.  Stand out in the crowd and turn to God for help.  He will help you, not because of your works but because of His love for you.  He will always help you even when you are too weak or powerless to help yourself.
