The Pursuit of Simplicity

Simplicity is often an elusive American dream.  Time-saving devices like cell phones often become obstacles to peace.  Here's a great example of how quickly peace is disrupted by an ill-timed phone call...

How do you respond when your life becomes complicated?  Do you give up on your pursuit of simplicity?  The violinist could have blown up, however, he chose a humorous response that allowed him to stay relaxed.  He let go of any anger he may have felt toward the rude guest.  The pursuit of simplicity also involves letting go.  Here are some simple steps to help you in your pursuit of simplicity:

  • Remain calm when situations get complicated.
  • Let go of low priorities on your "to do" list or delegate them.
  • Avoid arguments and look for common ground when dealing with angry people.
  • Pray.
  • Spend time with nature.
  • Ask for help.
  • Learn to say no to unimportant requests when you know your yes will make your life more complicated.
  • Eat simple foods.
  • Go to bed and get up at the same time every day.
  • Take care of your most important daily priority first.
