What Does Memorial Day Mean To You?

I shot the picture above one year ago in Town Square on Memorial Day.  It was the first time I celebrated Memorial Day in the Midwest.  The day is extra special for my family because my wife was born on Memorial Day.  Every year, volunteers in our community place the flags throughout the park-like setting for Memorial Day and again for Independence Day, my birthday.

I love how our town comes together to celebrate.  We have veterans dating back to WWII who show up in their uniforms to remember their fallen comrades.  Last year was picture-perfect.  This year, the rains are interfering with our barbecue plans.  A fog covers the park and the flags are saturated from three inches of rain that fell in the last twenty-four hours.  Though the day may appear dreary from the overcast skies, the memories of what our brave warriors did in past wars to give us our freedom will always be vivid in my mind every time I look at our flag or see one of our soldiers in uniform.

May God bless all the men and women who gave their lives for our freedom.  May all who lost a loved one be comforted on this special day.  One day is not enough to remember them.  They gave everything.  What does Memorial Day mean to you?  How will you celebrate?
