Fill Your Cup First: Fueling Your Soul, Guarding Your Joy

Fill Your Cup First: Fueling Your Soul, Guarding Your Joy

Star Date: 05.27.25

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the things that either fill me up—or wear me down.

Maybe you’ve felt it too. That heaviness at the end of the day when your energy is gone, and your heart feels a bit emptied out. Sometimes it’s from doing too much. But more often, it’s from doing too much for others without refilling yourself along the way.

The truth is this: you cannot pour from an empty cup.

We are called to serve. We are called to give. But even Jesus, who gave more than we ever could, withdrew to quiet places to pray—to be filled, restored, and renewed by His Father. If the Son of God needed to do that, how much more do we?

So here’s what I’m learning (and relearning daily):
I need to intentionally engage in activities that bring me life. Not just tasks that check off boxes—but things that make my soul light up.

For me, that looks like:

  • Writing stories that help others see God’s goodness.

  • Spending time in Scripture and prayer.

  • Laughing with loved ones.

  • Taking walks with eyes wide open for wonder.

  • Listening to music that lifts my spirit.

These are the things that fill my cup.

But there’s another side to the story: I also need to be mindful of what drains me.
It’s not always dramatic or obvious. Sometimes it’s a conversation where I feel unseen. A commitment I said “yes” to when I should have said “not now.” Or even mindless scrolling that numbs but doesn’t nourish.

Here’s the encouragement I want to leave you with today:

🧡 Give yourself permission to guard your joy.
🧡 Make space for what brings you life.
🧡 Let God refill your cup—so you can keep pouring into others, not from burnout, but from overflow.

If your cup feels a little empty today, I pray you find a quiet moment to reconnect with the Source of all peace and purpose. He’s waiting, arms wide, ready to fill you again.

Live Long & Prosper,
Michael

“My cup overflows with blessings.” — Psalm 23:5
