We're still alive after two matches yesterday. Despite a narrow loss that was decided in two super tiebreakers against a strong team from Kansas, we pulled out a win against St. Louis also decided by two tiebreakers. Both tiebteakers in the second round robin match were going on simultaneously and it wasn't looking good. One doubles team was facing triple match point at 7-9 while the other was losing 3-6. That darn fat lady was warming up to sing our exit song while St. Louis was getting ready to pop the cork on the champaign. Cheers bursted from the conclusion of the first tiebreaker which tied up the team score at 2-2. All eyes were on the final match featuring our team captain, Jim, and Brian. They came from behind and demonstrated what happens when you practice like no other.
We have our round three match close to high noon today. Depending on the outcome, we either go home or earn the right to advance to the quarter finals.
Spirits were high last night at Flame, perhaps the best steakhouse in Springfield, Missouri. I told the waiter I needed the largest ribeye on the menu. Our team captain ordered us a bottle of red wine to compliment the red blend our oldest player, Kevin, the first to arrive, already had opened for us. Another Mike on the team, the one who teamed up with Fred to win the opening super tiebreaker in the first round, asked, "Is wine on your carnivore food diet?"
I answered, "Jesus turned water into wine so, yes it is."
Terry, the only other pickleball player on my tennis team, found out I'm a writer. He was shocked. I pulled out my cell phone and showed him my blog. It was an interesting conversation.
Please forgive me if you discover any typos today. I'm using my cell phone to write this story while I'm on the road. It's going to be an exciting day today. Have a great day.
