Sam the Food Server Inspires Restaurant Review of Q39
Stardate 10.19.2026
She had me at hello.
I walked into Q39 after numerous people in the local community insisted I give this restaurant a try. Their recommendations finally convinced me to visit.
There is always an awkward moment when I walk into a restaurant to dine alone. The hosts naturally point toward the bar area, where solo diners can find a seat. Last night, I was greeted by Sam.
I told her this was my first visit. She welcomed me and seated me in the center of the dining area. When I asked who would be serving me, she smiled and replied, “Me.”
That was my introduction to Sam, and it set the tone for the entire evening.
Perhaps the extensive training she received contributed to her approach. I suspect her natural personality deserves plenty of credit, too.
A Ribeye and a Conversation
I had already decided what I wanted after looking at the online menu. I was planning to order a Kansas City steak but I couldn't find it on the menu Sam brought to my table.
Sam explained that the restaurant was changing its menu as the season changed. Much to my surprise, my favorite cut, the ribeye, was featured on the new menu.
She explained why the ribeye is a favorite, even though it is available only during certain seasons. She also shared information about the restaurant's commitment to local ingredients and the ten-step certification process the Angus beef undergoes.
I wanted to know more, and Sam was happy to share.
Our conversation turned to the training she received to become proficient at her craft. I was curious about the time invested in preparing employees to serve customers properly.
That curiosity would become an important part of my evening.
When Dinner Became an Experience
I was surprised when Josh, the manager on duty, accompanied another server to my table with my food.
My oh my.
If they happen to serve food in Heaven, this is it.
The presentation was wonderful, and the meal lived up to the anticipation. I was enjoying every bite.
I asked Sam if she would be willing to appear in a YouTube Short for a restaurant review I was planning to write.
She lit up.
Her enthusiasm was contagious. I had been writing daily stories for years, and I was discovering new ways to share the people and experiences that make life special. Sam's response gave me the spark to capture this visit on video.
Moments later, Zach, the chef, approached my table, introduced himself, and offered me a tour of the kitchen.
I was beside myself with joy.
The evening was unfolding in ways I never anticipated. I had arrived because people in the community recommended Q39. Sam's enthusiasm inspired me to record a video, and now Zach was inviting me behind the scenes.
Sam returned to check on me and share more about the family behind the restaurant. She asked me to turn around and look at the trophy case I hadn't even noticed when I walked in.
There they were: awards recognizing Q39's achievements in national barbecue competitions.
Sam explained that the trophies displayed at this location were unique to this restaurant. The collection was not duplicated at the other three locations.
I had come to appreciate the food. Now I was learning about the people and the history behind it.
One Man's Vision Becomes a Family Legacy
The founder, Rob Magee, had a vision. He dreamed big and worked to turn that dream into reality.
Kansas City has long been famous for its barbecue. Rob built a place for himself in that proud tradition.
Today, four restaurants serve customers, and the business has earned hundreds of national awards, including grand-prize honors and prize money.
A dream became a business, and that business became a family legacy.
Collin, Rob's son, joined me at my table and shared stories about his family. He told me about a barbecue competition he entered while still in grade school. His father coached him step by step, helping him earn a third-place trophy.
A photograph of father and son hangs on the walls of Q39, with the younger Collin wearing a chef's hat. I took a photograph to capture Collin alongside the image of his proud father.
That childhood trophy carries a special meaning. It represents a father who invested his time in teaching his son, sharing his knowledge, and helping him discover what he could accomplish.
Rob's influence remains visible throughout the restaurants.
The family's story continues today, with Collin's mother, Kelly Magee, at the helm. Rob's legacy lives on throughout all four restaurants in the Kansas City and Lawrence areas, a lasting reminder of the vision he brought to life.
The Secret Sauce Is in the Details
One thing Sam shared with me has stayed with me: the time and attention invested in training new employees.
At Q39, training is a priority. The restaurant invests in helping new hires learn their responsibilities and understand the standards expected of them.
That investment matters.
A restaurant can serve exceptional food, but the people who welcome guests, answer questions, explain the menu, and deliver the meal help shape the entire experience.
Sam demonstrated that from the moment I walked through the door.
Her enthusiasm encouraged me to ask questions. Those questions led to conversations about the food, the kitchen, the family, and the training that supports the restaurant's service.
The secret sauce is in the details.
I see a connection to what I have been learning during my away mission. Whether we're training a new employee, welcoming a customer, or building relationships in a community, the details matter. People remember how we make them feel.
The same principle applies to storytelling.
I could have written about any number of exceptional restaurants. The community recommendations brought me to Q39, and Sam's welcome inspired me to tell this story.
Before the evening was over, I had recorded YouTube Shorts featuring Sam and Zach. Sam even scanned my QR code so she could read the story when it was published.
I love that she will have an opportunity to see how her enthusiasm inspired me to share the experience with others.
A Place I'll Visit Again
Q39 has earned a place on my list of restaurants to revisit before my time on assignment comes to an end.
When my wife visits, this is one of the places I want to take her.
I look forward to sharing the food, introducing her to a place the local community encouraged me to discover, and telling her about the people I met along the way.
If you're looking for a memorable restaurant experience in the Kansas City or Lawrence area, put Q39 on your list. Make a reservation, give yourself time to enjoy the meal, and take a moment to appreciate the people who make the experience special.
Your taste buds will thank you.
I arrived at Q39 because people in the community recommended it. I left with a wonderful meal, new connections, and a story I was excited to share.
Sometimes, a simple welcome is all it takes to get a good story started.
Thank you, Sam, Zach, Josh, Collin, Timm, Kelly, and the Q39 team for an evening I never expected and won't soon forget.
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” — Colossians 3:23 (NIV)
Sam's enthusiasm, Zach's invitation to see the kitchen, and the care invested in training the team reminded me how much our work can mean to others. We may never know when a small act of kindness will encourage someone to share a story that reaches far beyond the moment.

Captain's Addendum
Spock: Michael, the evidence suggests that the restaurant's hospitality made a significant impression on you.
Bones: And he managed to turn dinner into a video production. I'm beginning to think the man can't eat a meal without finding a story.
Spock: An intriguing talent, Doctor. His next mission may require a larger memory card.
I have spent years looking for stories in the everyday moments of life. Last night reminded me that the people we meet can give us something wonderful to share. I'm grateful the community pointed me toward Q39, and I'm especially grateful Sam made me feel welcome enough to ask questions, start recording, and discover a family story I might otherwise have missed.
One person, one conversation, one story at a time.
One percent better, one day at a time.
